About the Council. . .
The American Immigration Council (the Council) works to strengthen America by shaping how America thinks about and acts towards immigrants and immigration and by working toward a more fair and just immigration system that opens its doors to those in need of protection and unleashes the energy and skills that immigrants bring. The Council brings together individuals adept at solving problems and employs four coordinated approaches to advance change—litigation, research, legislative and administrative advocacy, and communications.
Department Summary. . .
The Immigration Justice Campaign was established in 2017 as a collaboration between the American Immigration Council and the American Immigration Lawyers Association to design creative ways to provide counsel to immigrant populations navigating various aspects of our byzantine immigration system. The campaign works to activate a community of pro bono lawyers and other volunteers with supporting skills to defend immigrants facing removal, including those held in immigration detention.
Position Summary. . .
The American Immigration Council seeks an experienced, highly motivated, impact-driven, committed, and flexible Director to lead the development and implementation of a new strategic vision true to the Campaign’s origins while also responsive to the current political environment and opportunities that exist in the field to expand the campaign’s work. In collaboration with the Council’s executive leadership, the Campaign’s Director will set strategic direction and goals for the team, develop, and maintain external partnerships, and work to build and maintain the relationships necessary to fully fund the campaign’s work through initiative-taking, consistent, and ongoing engagement with prospective and current funders. The Director must have a deep knowledge of immigration law, the challenges that exist in increasing the availability of counsel for people navigating our immigration system, as well as experience in fundraising.
This position reports to the Managing Director, Programs and Strategy and directly manages seasoned professionals that are subject matter experts in their field. This role will be part of the American Immigration Council senior staff. As with all positions at the Council, this position requires commitment to the Council’s mission and the organization’s culture of philanthropy.
Essential Job Functions . . .
Strategy, Leadership and Development
- Provide overall strategic leadership, vision, guidance, and direction to the Campaign.
- Stay abreast of emerging trends impacting specific immigrant populations in the field to help inform the Council’s policy, advocacy, and litigation efforts.
- In partnership with the Development team, develop the annual fund-raising strategy for the Campaign, meet with key funding stakeholders, and ensure that adequate resources are secured to fund the overall campaign operations. In addition, provide timely and accurate reporting to funders as requested.
- Diversify funding sources to include grants, corporate partnerships, and federal grants as well as meeting grant commitments and leading grant reporting.
- Manage current budget to ensure proper stewardship of resources.
- Develop and shepherd strong relationships with other departments at the Council and partner organizations such as the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) and collaborate in planning and strategy.
Program Management and Implementation
- Lead the Campaign in setting goals, set up internal organization to accomplish objectives, measure progress, and hold each other accountable for outcomes.
- Manage effective mechanisms for decision making and planning.
- Facilitate persuasive communication and collaboration within the Campaign team and with other departments.
- Manage a high-performing, interdependent team and establish a team environment in which all staff feel supported, engaged, and valued and facilitate opportunities for the team to connect and grow stronger together.
External Relations and the Development of Best Practices
- Cultivate and shepherd a diverse group of external partnerships across the country at the state/local and national levels.
- Serve as spokesperson for the Campaign for select media opportunities and public speaking events.
- Shepherd the development of a set of best practices and lessons learned from the Campaign’s work.
- JD or master's degree in a related field.
- At least 10 years of overall experience in immigration policy, advocacy, or practice.
- At least 5 years of leadership experience.
- Some knowledge working on federal grants.
- Proven record of effective fundraising.
