At Georgetown Law’s Office of Career Strategy (OCS), we aim to promote long-term success and thoughtful, deliberate career paths to more than 1800 law students and thousands of alumni. OCS Advisors work with students to create their unique career plan, tailored to their specific needs and interests. Along the way, we provide many workshops, resources, and recruitment programs. We are committed to innovating and improving upon our own strategies for success to ensure that Georgetown Law graduates continue to be the most prepared and best equipped in the nation.

Job Overview

The Assistant Director, 2L/3L Team, within the Office of Career Strategy (“OCS”) is responsible for ensuring high quality advising for 2L and 3L students (~100 students) including providing one-on-one and group career advising, designing resources, and coordinating programming for students. They counsel students individually and in groups on job search skills (e.g., resume and cover letter creation), differentiating between and applying to different types of legal employers, interviewing techniques, and developing a plan to achieve short-term and long-term career goals.

The Assistant Director also has a specific area of focus to complement their advising responsibilities, which may include coordinating OCS communications and marketing, organizing business and corporate law initiatives, transfer student initiatives, international JD student initiatives, and/or creating resources for regional markets and strategizing with the OCS Recruiting Team for outreach to employer in those markets. The Assistant Director will create resources and programming related to their area of focus.

Work Interactions

One of the primary goals of OCS is to ensure that every student receives individualized career planning and job search advice throughout their time at Georgetown. As a member of the 2L/3L Team of advisors, the Assistant Director works with other 2L/3L advisors to create strategies, programming, and resources for students navigating their first year of law school and coordinates with the 1L team at the conclusion of OCI.

Reporting to the Director, they work very closely with their OCS colleagues; and have contact with other administrative staff and faculty in the Law Center, employers, alumni, and student groups. As well, they may interact with employers and colleagues from other law schools through the National Association for Law Placement (NALP) and Washington Area Legal Recruiting Administrators Association (WALRAA), and represent OCS when appropriate.

Qualifications

  • JD degree or advanced counseling degree, with emphasis in career counseling
  • Private sector legal experience and/or prior counseling background and/or experience working with law students

Preferred qualifications

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, demonstrated interpersonal skills, and a team approach to problem solving
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks effectively
