Job Overview

The Police Lieutenant, in a Command Staff position, has purview over all Law Center service functions, which may include Patrol, Support and Special Services bureaus.

Additionally, they provide proximity and exercise delegated authority of the Law Center Command Staff so that critical decisions are made in a timely manner and quality of service is assured.

As assigned, they supervise, oversee and coordinate activities of police operations; and are responsible for researching, designing and implementing all training and certification requirements for sworn and non-sworn personnel. As well, they may be responsible for managing special events, student guards, and contract security functions.

Work Interactions

Reporting to the Deputy Chief of Police or their designee, the Police Lieutenant works independently with limited supervision. During their tour of duty and as assigned, they directly or indirectly supervise Sergeants, Communications Officers, Special Police Officers, Security Officers, Student Guards - and may manage contract security.

Please note:

  • All applicants are subject to a written test, a report writing test, drug test, physical examination by a medical doctor to University specifications, and extensive psychological testing.
  • As well, they must be able to pass a comprehensive background investigation and to qualify for a Special Police Officer's Commission.
  • To verify eligibility, applicants may be required to complete a written exam, a physical agility test, a panel interview, a background investigation, medical and psychological exams, a post-offer, pre­ employment drug test, and other procedures as necessary.

Technical Qualifications or Specialized Certification

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license with no violations in the last three years
  • Must have the ability to pass Georgetown University driver's certification

Requirements and Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalency – preference for a Bachelor’s degree
  • At least 5 years of progressively responsible law enforcement experience related to public safety, including at least 2 years of supervisory experience [note: An equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered in lieu of above requirements]

Performance Qualifications

  • Comfortable using computers including Microsoft Office Suite apps (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) email and/or the ability to learn these applications
  • An intermediate knowledge of criminal and civil law and of police practices and procedures
  • Ability to employ tact and patience during interactions with students, staff, faculty, visitors, and community members
  • Respect for the use of police power in relation to a university environment
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills, including report writing
  • Working knowledge of electronic reporting systems

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience in and responsibility for critical incident response and notification procedures
  • Experience and/or training in situations involving sexual assault and discrimination (including religious, racial, and sexual orientation)
  • Emergency management experience
  • Additional certifications in training
  • Knowledge of telecommunications equipment
  • Administrative and clerical skills

ESSENTIAL: The Police Lieutenant is designated as essential under the University Human Resource policy guidelines and therefore is subject to be on call when necessary. They must be willing to work extended, odd off hours to achieve the expectations of the Department. This may include rotating tours of duty (day shifts, evening shifts, overnight shifts) with fluctuating days off, according to departmental needs.
