Job Overview

The Medical-Legal Partnership Director & Managing Attorney for the Health Justice Alliance (HJA) is a new staff attorney position is being funded through a grant from the Marriott Foundation to the Georgetown University Hospital Department of Community Pediatrics (DCP).

The HJA Law Clinic provides direct legal services to DCP patient families to help address the legal barriers that negatively impact their health and well-being. Under the supervision of law faculty, students learn to use law as a tool to improve health and reduce disparities and participate in interprofessional education, research, and policy initiatives designed to further social and health justice.

This new position is tied directly to DCP’s efforts to build on its current partnership with the HJA Law Clinic to design and implement a MedStar Georgetown Medical Financial Partnership.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Co-lead the planning and design of an evidence-based medical-financial partnership (MGMFP) model in collaboration with HJA’s medical and research partners
  • Coordinate legal training of healthcare providers, contribute to the HJA’s educational mission for law and medical students, and support DCP and HJA community engagement efforts
  • Provide direct legal services to DCP patients ranging from brief advice to full representation in coordination with the HJA Law Clinic
  • Manage data collection and reporting obligations for grant funded work and participate in the HJA’s research and evaluation efforts internally and at the national level
  • Help build advocacy and policy capacity for DCP and the medical-legal partnership approach to healthcare based on experience and lessons learned from the MGMFP model

Work Interactions and Work Mode Designation

The Medical-Legal Partnership Director & Managing Attorney will be integrated directly into the DCP and HJA Law Clinic teams as they help design and implement a new Medical Financial partnership that is closely tied to the public benefits, housing, and other legal services work of the HJA Law Clinic.

Reporting directly to the Faculty Director of the HJA, they will receive primary supervision and guidance from - and regularly collaborate and communicate with - the HJA Law Clinic’s Director and Deputy Director, especially as new work and roles are being determined. As well, they will work closely with other members of the HJA, including the HJA’s Director of Operations, and Director of Research and Evaluation, and the attorneys in HJA’s Cancer LAW and Perinatal LAW Projects.

While the Director & Managing Attorney has no planned direct reports, they may supervise and mentor Georgetown students and oversee graduate fellows as needed. As well, they will have a significant role in ensuring that the program, research components, and delivery of legal services are developed and implemented in a manner that is responsive to the needs of DCP patients, and that its leadership and consistent with the HJA’s current relationship with GUMC and MedStar Health.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • JD from an accredited law school
  • A minimum of 10 years post-J.D.
  • Legal experience providing civil legal services to low-income clients
  • Current member in good standing of the District of Columbia Bar
  • The willingness and ability to work collaboratively with doctors, nurses, social workers, and other healthcare providers to leverage medical expertise to advance legal advocacy at the individual and community level
  • A demonstrated commitment to social justice and service to vulnerable clients
  • Experience collaborating with other legal and social service organizations serving families with low-income in Washington, D.C.
  • Experience with policy advocacy to advance social justice for people with low income
  • Interest in contributing to the data and other research focused on measuring the impact of medical-legal partnership on health and legal outcomes
  • Willingness to develop legal expertise as needed, and ability to travel between local clinical sites

Preferred Qualifications

  • MLP experience or experience building new legal aid programs or expanding existing ones
  • Demonstrated managerial experience over junior attorneys, paralegals, and/or law or medical student interns
  • Experience training healthcare providers or other interdisciplinary partners on areas of law
  • Expertise in one or more of the following areas of law: public benefits, housing, consumer and other financial debt, and education
