The Digital Freedom Fund works to advance digital rights through strategic litigation in Europe. We do this through grants that support the legal, advocacy, research, and other costs involved in litigation as well as through facilitating skill development and networking of organisations working on digital rights issues, among others. DFF co-drives a process towards decolonising the digital rights field, which informs all our work. The initiative focuses on the need to tackle how uneven power dynamics, exclusion, and systems of oppression play out in the current digital rights field, to increase our capacity to foster change for all.
We are looking for a Finance Officer (half-time) to provide support in financial administration and management. The Finance Officer will work under the supervision of the Finance Manager.
DFF’s team works completely remote with occasional meet-ups. The team is based in various cities in Europe, with the majority based in Germany, where the Finance Officer will preferably be based (other locations can be considered). DFF is incorporated under Dutch law and must follow Dutch accounting standards, however, with most staff employed under German law, German employment and tax law are applicable.
Role description
The Finance Officer's activities will include the following main tasks:
· Support the Finance Manager with the book-keeping and accounting management of the organisation by:
o Processing purchase invoices, expense claims and requests for payment,
o Processing bank, credit card and petty cash transactions, and
o Verifying input accuracy on account entries;
· Prepare draft funding applications budgets and funding reports;
· Assist in grantmaking due diligence and contracting;
· Provide input in the annual organisational budgeting process;
· Assist in the preparation of documentation for annual audits;
· Aid on ad-hoc finance and administrative tasks, such as flight bookings, when required.
The focus of tasks listed above is narrowed to the most essential tasks, but as a small, flexible organisation, there will be possibility to adapt the role based on the candidate’s competencies and interests.
Candidate profile
The successful candidate will have:
· Experience of working in an administrative and/or finance role where you were responsible for some of the tasks listed above;
· Basic knowledge of and experience in accounting and financial data analysis;
· Experience in organisational/event budgeting;
· Excellent IT skills and strong knowledge of Microsoft Office, particularly highly competency in the use of Excel pivot tables, functions and formulae;
· Knowledge of accounting software, such as Exact Online, or desire to build skills in use of this software for financial analysis;
· Excellent organisation and administrative skills, including the ability to develop systems to ensure all responsibilities are completed in a transparent, trackable and timely manner;
· Fluent in written and spoken English;
· Familiarity with the German employment context and German language are a plus;
· Be willing to work remotely and self-support in terms of various administrative matters.
The successful candidate will also:
· Critically reflect on their own work and implement feedback as a way to constantly evolve and improve;
· Have experience/willingness in working with people whose mother tongue is not English;
· Be excited to work on digital rights issues using an intersectional lens;
· Be motivated in working towards an anti-oppressive workplace;
· Have basic proficiency with common office software and utilities such as cloud servers, password managers, project management software and MS Office;
· Have a valid work permission in an EU country. Occasional international travel can be required.
Conditions
Salary: EUR 32,000 – 38,000 gross per year, pro rata, depending on experience. This job is for a half-time role, which means 2 days per week / 16 hours per week, given that DFF is currently trialling the four-day week for full time staff. The initial employment term will be one year, with the possibility of renewal. DFF offers additional employment benefits such as a wellness bonus, home office support and private pension contribution after the first year of employment.
