You are ...

  • Passionate about the information environment and guaranteeing its safety and integrity;
  • Looking to leverage your skills to spark and support data-driven investigations across borders;
  • Committed to approaching digital threats from a global lens - helping mitigate risks beyond the US and EU.

WHAT TO FIX is looking for an Investigations Lead to join its small and mighty team and support its ongoing work to address the root causes of misinformation, disinformation, and online hate.

This assignment supports the Executive Director and Policy Lead with WTF’s Platform Monetization project. This role will be responsible for ensuring impactful, comprehensive, and globally diverse coverage of the various harms associated with the lack of social media platforms’ ad revenue share programs oversight.

The project builds on a unique trove of data, collected over 4 years, which makes up the Facebook Publisher Archive. Building on this data, as well as research into monetization programs and their impact on the information environment, WTF seeks to trigger a global conversation around how to regulate social media ad revenue share programs.

You can expect to:

  • Conduct qualitative and quantitative research;
  • Develop and operationalize a strategy to maximize the use and awareness of the Archive among investigativejournalists, fact-checkers, OSINT researchers, creators, and civil society around the globe;
  • Engage, train, and support journalists and researchers conducting investigations;
  • Develop communication and training materials as needed;
  • Maintain an investigations database, identify existing gaps and potential case studies/investigations;
  • Coordinate with and support the ongoing work of the Executive Director and Policy Lead.

Required skills and experience

  • Direct experience dealing with challenges to the information environment, as a journalist, researcher, activist, fact checker, or other related fields;
  • Solid English writing skills, with experience producing and/or editing investigative data stories;
  • Experience dealing with datasets and data analysis;
  • Excellent ability to work collaboratively with, communicate, coordinate, and train others;
  • Proactiveness and resourcefulness - marked by a can-do attitude and creativity.

What we offer:

  • Flexible working hours and conditions, as part of a fully remote team;
  • Competitive rate - commensurate with experience;
  • Unique data and expertise in the information integrity and tech accountability space - helping ensure that your skills contribute to groundbreaking and high-impact global advocacy and risk mitigation efforts.

This is a short-term assignment (up to 5 months) — with the possibility of extension.
